Pakistan’s very own top designers and models held their first-ever Fashion Week, even as extremist group and the government’s army are making bigger headlines. The event, which was held for four days, has had postponements twice, amidst fears and security issues.

And yet, as one of the designers presented said, the show must go on.

And it did, even quite well received, actually.

The collection presented was a mix of high fashion couture and ready to wear styles, many of which had models baring their navels and shoulders, which was unusual for a country where women were, by culture, often dressed all covered up. Models cruise the catwalk wearing shorts and sequined T-shirts, spiked bracelets and body armors. Some even had tattoos exposed.

The show was a liberation. It was a celebration of strong women everywhere. Says Sonya Battla, one of the designers who featured such a bold collection (as opposed to what their culture mandates) — “I’m a very brave woman. I’m not going to be scared and no one’s going to judge me.”

Ayesha Tammy Haq, who heads Pakistan’s Fashion Week says: “This is our gesture of defiance to the Taliban. There is a terrible problem of militancy and political upheaval, but that doesn’t mean that the country shuts down. That doesn’t mean that business comes to a halt.”

Fashion Week Pakistan was held at the Marriot Hotel in Pakistan’s financial district. Because of security concerns, the supposed plan to feature even designers from abroad was scrapped, hence Pakistan’s Fashion Week featured all local talents and was a rousing success.

Fashion changes all the time, it can be quite difficult to keep up with. The best thing about fashion and the latest trends is that sometimes when a particular trends disappears to the back of your wardrobe it can appear again so quick and that’s what is currently happening with military designs. Military started becoming popular when rock chicks like Avril Lavigne would constantly wear it, then it faded only to return now stronger and even better.

Military caps are the smallest and yet most must have of the entire ensemble, you can wear one with any outfit of the army style genre, its all about a mix and match. The caps usually come with a nice dark green with occasional shows of black, either way they look great and match up well.

For pants you can have your ordinary and very stylish one color style pants or if you prefer khakis and combats then the selections are larger and more eye catching, again a lot of greens and dark browns for the pants, men and woman can pull this look off and find a large amount to choose from.

For jackets and boots you could find a nice long grey cape which would really flatter the rest of your outfit, brown could work to. A new accessorie to the military look is boots. You can now finish up your outfit with a great pair of specially designed boots for any occasion, if boots are not your thing then how about shoes with an army feel and design across the sides. This trend is one you should catch onto quickly, its really a winner.

Leather fashion brand Louis Vuitton will be turning 150 this month and as a way of commemorating this, the North American branch of the leather brand known for its hard-frame luggage and fantastic bag designs and quality, will be donating a huge percentage of November’s sales to the American Red Cross. The company will be focusing sales on these four special bags for this charity event: Keepall, Noe, Alma, and Speedy.

Daniel Lalonde, President & CEO of Louis Vuitton North America says: “The Red Cross is committed to preventing and appeasing the sufferance of people weakened by instability and ever-growing de-humanization of our society. Louis Vuitton is honored to be aligned with such a significant and impactful organization.”

Keepall was originally part of LV’s truck collection and is now used popularly as a weekend tote bag. The Speedy is essentially the bag many people will recognize as LV, while the other two, the Noe and the Alma, are also classic LV’s.

Elsewhere, celebrations will include fashion collaborations among a pool of designers. The pieces they will create will be auction offed at Sotheby on Nov 2010.

The famous make-up brand, MAC, has tapped 80’s icon and singer Cyndi Lauper as well as fashion muse, pop artist and style icon, Lady Gaga, as the newest faces to the “From Our Lips” campaign. The two celebrities will have two new lipsticks styled after their own style and preferences and this will then be launched in March 2010. The lipsticks will be called what else but “Cyndi” and “Gaga”, with each tube costing about $14. It’s quite affordable, actually, and considering that proceeds of all sales (yes, that is right, it’s 100%) will be going to charity, I would imagine ladies with style will not hesitate spending for this.

MAC’s charity, the MAC Aids Fund, has been established in the early 1994 and has been annually raising funds for its cause.

It seems to be the latest trend amongst celebrities to release a fashion line in their name so it comes of no surprise to find out that the increasingly popular American rock band Kings of Leon have quickly followed suit. The rockers have an impressive career so far with grammy awards and sell out concerts but now they are turning into another area completely after teaming up with French designers Surface to Air to release a limited edition clothing line.

Picture+25

The band are already famous for their stylish outfits on stage on off, with their skinny jeans, leather boots and hats fans must be excited to see what their idols are going to release as limited pieces. The word of mouth reveals that the collection will contain green and red flannels, black leather bomber jackets, denim pants with a unique touch, braided belts, bandana’s which have not been seen in a while so lets see if the boys can being them back to fashion.

The very vintage collection is going to be a twelve piece collection but limited edition meaning that if you get the chance to own something or if you are lucky enough, one of everything then it will fast become a collectors item so be a proud fan and cherish the collection.

Kings of Leon’s new and limited fashion line is set to hit Paris Texas which is a store in Copenhagen come early December so if you are a fan of perhaps just a worshiper of fashion then make sure you are there to pick up some vintage rare fashion pieces.

The domestic diva would sculpt images of Jesus, Joseph and Mary out of clay and have them glazed in prison, too. She once said that for her five months stay there, leading up to the Christmas season, she would ask the guards if she could teach pottery classes to the inmates, with the objective of teaching them how to make an entire nativity scene by the end of it.

Of course, these days, she’s probably making more elaborate and gorgeous displays than that, now that she’s back to running her company again. But what this story lets us see is how much popular nativity sets are everywhere. It truly is one of the must-have decorations to set up for the holidays.

With many Christian homes, especially, this display serves as the centerpiece to Christmas. These iconic figurines, which first came out in the 13th century, are inherently rich in story and history. The nativity scene is symbolic as well as dramatic. It is a constant reminder of why we actually celebrate the season of Christmas.

You don’t necessarily have to be an expert potter and sculpture artist like Martha Stewart, to be able to come up with a decent nativity display, because nativity sets are readily available online, where you can buy them. They even come with a lot of choices and options now, so you have plenty to choose from. But a basic set usually consists of the baby Jesus in a manger, his parents Joseph and Mary, and the angel looking down upon them. Some come with more elaborate details and characters like the barnyard animals and their shepherd masters, and of course, the Three Wise Men. Some nativity sets also come up with bright and beautiful Christmas lights, which make the nativity set a breathtaking accent piece during holidays. Whether placed indoors or outdoors, a nativity scene always makes a great impact.

Decorating a nativity scene is only a challenge in so far as your creativity is concerned. Again, you don’t have to have Martha Stewart expertise but with what you can buy online, it’s easier to put the figurines up on display. You can choose to scale them according to what you prefer, sometimes even adding a few trees and houses, to make the display even more presentable. And you can even make decorating a fun family activity, like you would with Christmas tree decorations.

I actually prefer a nativity scene to a tall Christmas tree because I think this truly represents the spirit of Christmas.

I wonder what Lady Gaga is going to go as this Halloween season? With her penchant for wearing outrageous outfit all the time, do you think she has more to show and surprise people come Halloween? She’s probably one of the very few stars who can get away in public looking really normal in plain clothes, as we have never really seen what she looks like that way. And whether we have liked or disliked the clothes she wears, one thing is certain, Lady Gaga is a fashion forward princess, and her style is very much her own. Because of this the Accessories Council Excellence Awards (ACE) from New York is giving the pop singer their Stylemaker Award, in acknowledgement of her very individualistic efforts.

The award will be presented by Marc Jacobs, one of Lady Gaga’s friends and preferred designers.

The awards ceremony will be held at the Cipriani and we can’t wait to see what she’s going to wear to receive this award.

HAIR BEAUTY TIPS

The most important thing you need to know about conditioners still remains that - 'Too much will leave you with limp hair and too little will leave your hair crackling with static electricity, especially during winter.

The basic function of a conditioner is to replace the sebum that is lost from your hair. And though you get shampoos and conditioners fortified with vitamins and proteins and fruit extracts, the base line remains that none of them can replace the importance of a balanced and healthy diet. Nevertheless, it is always better to know what to use and what not to use for your hair. Different types of conditioners with varying ingredients are available in the market today. Choose what best suits your hair.

Here's everything you wanted to know about conditioners but did not know whom to ask:

Protein Conditioners

Fortified with proteins, these lubricate your hair between washes. Although the protein does not penetrate the hair shaft, it can temporarily thicken your hair.

Deep Conditioners

These usually contain most of the agents found in instant conditioners and are more concentrated. Deep conditioners are meant to remain on the hair for a longer period of time, at least for about 20 minutes. They are also available in the form of hot-oil treatments or protein packs.

The use of deep conditioners may include the application of heat, because warmth causes the small breaks holes in the hair shaft to enlarge. Deep conditioners work very well for damaged hair. Once a month is what experts recommend.

Leave-In Conditioners

These cover the gamut of blow-drying lotions, hair glazes, and hair thickeners. These are applied o shampooed, towel-dried hair and not removed until the next washing. These products increase the shine in dull hair but do nothing for split ends or frizz ness.

Instant Conditioners

Meant to be used straight from the bottle as they are premixed, these are to be applied immediately after shampooing. Instant conditioners usually contain additives including herbal extracts, aloe, vitamins, balsam, and lanolin. These give sheen to the hair, but are only mildly conditioning.

Hair Conditioner:

Use mayonnaise to periodically condition your hair (do not use miracle whip-real mayonnaise only). Apply mayo to dry hair, work through thoroughly. Cover with plastic cap, wrap in warm towel and leave on for 20-30 minutes. Wash as usual. Leaves hair shiny and conditions it also

Jojoba Hair Conditioner

Summer sun is bad and it can dry out and damage our hair. This formula helps restore manageability to your hair, making it healthy smooth, and soft again Take a cup of rose floral water, 1 tablespoon jojoba oil, 10 drops vitamin E oil. To make: In the top of a double boiler, gently warm the rose water. Once rose water is warm, add jojoba oil. For damaged hair or extra conditioning, leave on for several minutes, perhaps while bathing. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Shampoo lightly and rinse again with cool water.
EasyWeightLossTea

Normal to Oily Hair

– Add water, lemon in henna. You can apply Henna fortnightly.

Home made conditioners

Add ¼ cup of vinegar in ½ bucket of water. This will give a good shine to your hair. Apply curd for 1hour.

Hair Tonics

Try tonic Hair Oil’s powder - Put 4 tsp of this powder in water, boil it and after cooling down apply it on hair. This will stop hair loss, rejuvenate and nourish your hair.

Quick- fix hair tips

Henna soaked in water of used tea bags, coffee powder, amla powder can make for a excellent conditioner giving your hair the much needed boost.

There are a dozen of hair accessories available in the market today. Use clips, pins and bands to give your hair a different style and an added touch of color.

*

Conditioners that claim to deeply penetrate work only if there's enough time and heat for them to be absorbed into the hair shaft. Most women who apply a conditioner in the shower never leave it on for longer than 1 or 2 minutes. That's fine, but don't expect the hair to soak it up. If you have damaged hair, it is very important to leave the conditioner on for as long as possible.

*

Too much conditioner or conditioner that isn't thoroughly rinsed out can make hair go limp. Using a shampoo that contains conditioning agents plus a conditioner can result in buildup on the hair, making it heavy and lifeless. Generally, a shampoo with minimal or no conditioning agents at all is best, and then use your conditioner only where you need it, not necessarily all over or near the roots and scalp

As much as possible, use natural and organic hair-care products. Many commercial shampoos, conditioners, and rinses contain chemicals that in the long run can damage the hair. Daily or regular shampooing, rinsing, and conditioning with natural products can help keep hair healthy and beautiful. Looked for hair care products with wheat germ, jojoba, and/or coconut oil, keratin, vitamins such as biotin, panthenol, vitamin A, E and essential oils.

BEAUTY TIPS FOR THE INDIAN BRIDE

We asked Shalini to share her personal beauty tips for the brides-to-be visiting IndianWeddingSite.com. Below are some of her favorites that we are sure will help you look even more radiant on your big day.

Even though Indian Brides are known to wear very dramatic makeup, Less Is More when it comes to makeup for your wedding day. Keep foundation light-weight and powder silky to avoid your makeup coming across as very heavy.

Wear gloss, preferably a pink one, to brighten up and soften your look. Dark burgundy and red lipsticks can tend to look harsh and age you in your pictures.

Avoid heavy and dark lipliners. Use a nude color to frame the lip and apply your lipstick with a lip brush for defined, full lips.

Look for foundations, concealers and powders with either yellow or olive undertones to avoid looking gray and washed out in your photos.

Brows are everything but don't try waxing or threading the day before your wedding. You may react and it’s hard to conceal the irritation. Opt for getting your treatments done one week prior to the big event.

Play with false eyelashes for extra drama. Instead of wearing really dark eyeshadows, lighten up with golds and bronzes and add drama with full false lashes!

You know how desi weddings go.....ALWAYS wear waterproof mascara :-)

For Middle-Eastern and Indian brides, it is considered to be good luck; the darker the mehndi design is, the longer it lasts. These intricate mehndi designs are applied to the bride and her female friends and family. It is said that the darker the mehndi design, the more love her in-laws will have for her and the stronger the marriage will be. Also, as long as the mehndi design is on the bride's hand, she will not be asked to do any housework. Applying lemon juice to the mehndi afterward can also help you achieve a darker design.
CALMING EFFECTS OF HENNA

Henna is also popular because of the benefits for the body; it has a cooling and calming effect on the body and mind, not only for the person receiving the mehndi design, but also for the person designing it. Henna is thought to have other "healing" properties as well and has been widely used to treat a variety of disorders such as dandruff, skin lesions, burns, etc. It could be thought to be beneficial because of the natural ingredients that are added to the mehndi plant, such as lemon juice and essential oils like tea tree oil.

Mehndi designs are typically very intricate and elaborate with the mehndi being applied out of a cone (similar to a cake decorating tube). You can follow a design from a template or, for an easier way, you can put a stencil over your hand and apply the mehndi over the stencil. To make the cones that are used in applying the mehndi, cut plastic freezer bags into 6” squares and then roll it into a cone, leaving a very small opening at the bottom for the mehndi to squeeze out of. Tape the cone into place, leaving no gaps for the mehndi to squirt out from. Fill the bag halfway with the mehndi and then twist the top to keep it in. You can also purchase mehndi cones from Middle-Eastern stores or online if you don't want to make your own. Mehndi designs are not just for Indian brides though, these designs have also been seen on celebrities such as Madonna and Demi Moore. Now that you know a little more about henna, you can try using it to decorate yourself, just as women in India have been doing for thousands of years.
